Selecting the correct stainless-steel grade affects corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, fabricability, and cost. This guide covers the factors that influence grade selection for common project applications.

Common grades

304 is the most widely used austenitic stainless steel. It offers good corrosion resistance in general environments and is suitable for most indoor and protected outdoor applications.

316 contains molybdenum, which improves resistance to chloride environments. It is commonly specified for coastal, marine, chemical, and healthcare applications.

202 is a lower-nickel alternative that provides moderate corrosion resistance. It is often used in decorative and architectural applications where cost is a primary consideration.

Selection factors

Consider the operating environment, exposure to chemicals or chlorides, temperature range, mechanical loads, surface finish requirements, and budget constraints. The final grade selection should be confirmed against the project specification.
